Verification of the INMOM Circulation Model Results for the Black Sea with Variational Assimilation of Water Temperature

The problem of variational data assimilation for the INMOM sea circulation model implemented for the Black Sea area was investigated. An algorithm that allowed joint assimilation of satellite sea surface temperature data and three-dimensional water temperature fields was applied. The results of numerical experiments were verified against ARGO float measurement data. It was shown that the influence of sea surface temperature data assimilation remained limited at depth. At the same time, assimilation of three-dimensional water temperature fields made it possible to significantly increase the accuracy of calculated temperature fields in deep layers. The results of the study have demonstrated that three-dimensional data enable implementation of effective assimilation algorithms and can be used to improve the reliability of predictive models for marine systems.
