Vibrational spectrum of methanesulfinic acid produced by photooxidation of methanethiol in a solid argon matrix

• Weak intermolecular complexes between methanethiol (CH3SH) and oxygen molecule (O2) were trapped in an Ar matrix at 5 K. • CH3SH…O2 complexes readily decompose under the 254-nm photolysis unlike pure CH3SH in the same conditions leading to new photooxidation products. • The variety of photoproducts includes SO2, CO, OCS, HC(O)SH, CH3S(O)OH and many other species as monitored by FTIR spectroscopy. • The IR-spectrum of atmospherically relevant methanesulfinic acid revealing 11 fundamental vibrational frequencies was obtained and characterized for the first time.
