Abstract

• Developed a lab-scale 2D tank system capable of incorporating the hydrologic condition present under gaining stream conditions in wetlands. • Developed an image analysis technique to determine the mass fraction of iron (hydr)oxide present in the sand layer. • The addition of sodium citrate to influent solutions prevented the formation of visible iron (hydr)oxides in the sand layer. • Similarities of the iron and uranium concentrations suggest that ferrous iron oxidation and subsequent precipitation of ferric hydroxide can facilitate removal of uranium from aqueous solutions.
