• Photovoice, a participatory photography research method, is increasingly used to study processes of socio-ecological change. • We reviewed 132 articles using photovoice to study environmental change and the social groups and communities involved with the method. • Photovoice highlights diverse perspectives and brings out the experiential and emotional aspects of environmental change. • It provides scholars with an understanding of alternative epistemologies of environmental change. • For communities and vulnerable groups, it provides a tool for dialogue, awareness-raising, and advocacy. • With attention to its pitfalls, broader use of photovoice can foster epistemological pluralism and insights that can lead to action.
