• First integration of water purification services into a macroeconomic-ecosystem assessment framework. • We assess water quality investments in Uruguay using a multiregional Integrated Economic-Environmental Model (IEEM). • Investments boost economic and ecosystem indicators, revealing tradeoffs with food provisioning services. • This multiregional approach to regulating ecosystem services is adaptable across countries and policies. • The framework guides spatially targeted policies and compensation mechanisms to offset negative tradeoffs.
