Abstract

The article investigates the current state of stress management interventions (SMIs) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), analyzing practices and tools for managing stress and evaluating their impact on employee well-being and organizational performance. The quantitative study involved 300 Polish SMEs, with data collected from company owners, board members, human resources (HR) managers, and specialists using dedicated survey, assisted by a computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) method. Research results indicate a low frequency of recommended SMI practices: half of the companies lacked stress diagnostic tools, one-third did not evaluate intervention effectiveness, and few calculated stress-related costs. Effectiveness` assessments relied on employee interviews rather than HR data or key performance indicators (KPIs). The study presents the state of understanding stress management in the workplace, rarely presented in the scientific literature. It highlights the need for a structured SMI approach, improved awareness, and a dedicated SMI implementation model to enhance SMEs' organizational efficiency and effectiveness. SMEs should implement clear stress management procedures using European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) guidelines to improve risk awareness, assessment, and intervention. Collaboration between institutions and policymakers is needed to raise leadership awareness of workplace stress. Integrating staff suggestions into formal procedures fosters a healthier workplace culture and enhances stress management efforts. SMEs need adaptable SMI models tailored to their unique needs.
