• The way entities are conceptualized in science informs the roles they can play in the resolution of environmental issues. • When particular entities are excluded from consideration in sustainability science, their sustained existence is challenged. • Post-Enlightenment onto-epistemic assumptions lead to a classification of entities as “real” or “imagined”. • We introduce ontological imaginaries as a way of engaging with the entities and relationships that exist for people. • Ontological imaginaries can inform environmental policy by giving insight into the entities implicated by a particular issue.
