• Wildfire plumes decreased sulfate concentrations over Northeast Asia. • CO and VOCs from wildfires depleted OH and suppressed SO2 oxidation. • Reduced sulfate mainly originated from inland anthropogenic sources. • Sulfate in downwind regions can decrease despite wildfire plume transport.
