Wearable devices have attracted much interest in the last decade. Several sensing functions such as measuring heart rate and logging number of steps are integrated in smartwatches and fitness trackers. Smartwatches and fitness trackers are worn on the wrist; therefore, the sensing functionalities is limited to single-point measurement. On-body distributed sensors will provide more detailed information than a single-point measurement. For powering the sensors and collecting the data, embedding batteries and wireless communication modules into each of these distributed sensors seems impractical. This paper presents wireless access to batteryless sensors distributed on a conductive textile. A double-sided conductive textile works as a transmission line, through which dc power and radio-frequency (RF) signals are transferred simultaneously. The presented scheme can eliminate individual wires that would be required in conventional wired system for connecting a data sink node and each of sensors, as well as individual batteries and wireless modules.
