• An analytical model is established to reveal energy competition in wrinkling. • The effects of geometric parameters on wrinkling susceptibility are revealed. • A 20 mm straight edge threshold is identified to effectively suppress wrinkling. • The correlation between wrinkling and martensitic transformation is clarified.
