• The fine needle-like Zn-CoP/NF is prepared via a two-step hydrothermal-phosphidation method. • The Zn-CoP/NF electrode exhibits excellent dual performance for HER and supercapacitors. • Zn doping optimized the electronic structure of Co and P and exhibited a synergistic electrochemical effect.
