ZSM-48 (*MRE type zeolite), with its characteristic 10-MR pore structure and tuneable acidity, is a versatile and extensively investigated material for catalytic processes. This review explores the complex interactions between its synthesis parameters and resultant functionality of ZSM-48, focusing on its performance for n-alkane hydroisomerization as a key reaction in upgrading middle distillates. The structural characteristics of the *MRE family are presented, with an emphasis on the ZSM-48 type and discussions of alternative synthesis techniques. It emphasizes the important interplay of preparation factors such silicate and aluminate sources, Si/Al ratios, gel composition, and template selection. The effects of the aforementioned factors on crystallinity, shape, and acid strength are addressed, with a focus on catalytic activity. By correlating these ZSM-48 characteristics with catalytic performance, particularly in hydroisomerization and dewaxing processes for high-quality diesel and sustainable aviation fuels, the study provides insights into optimizing bifunctional catalysts that combine metal sites with tailored acid functionalities. This paper also places attention on the emerging synthesis strategies of seed-assisted and controlled desilication methods, with the purpose of overcoming diffusion limitations and enhancing catalyst stability, thereby advancing the design of next-generation catalysts for sustainable fuel production.
