Fostering collaborative futures: Multidisciplinary approaches to AI integration in educational ecosystems

With the rapid evolution of AI and data-driven technologies, AI integration in the educational ecosystem requires careful consideration. This paper aims to facilitate the process of fostering collaborative futures with AI agents in education by examining the impact of AI on education from the perspectives of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. The authors conducted a Delphi study involving a survey administered to N = 70 international professionals, followed by in-depth face-to-face discussions with a panel of international experts from policy, research, and practice to identify key trends and challenges for deploying AI in education. The results indicate that the three most important trends were (1) AI-related competences for learners and educators, (2) automated formative assessments and feedback with AI agents, and (3) the evolved roles of teachers to teach with AI agents. Additionally, top importance included (4) the ongoing imperative to explainability and trustworthiness of AI agents and (5) accessibility and equal access to AI agents. Based on these findings, the paper outlines policy and action recommendations for collaborative AI initiatives in education and proposes a research agenda to address identified research gaps.
