Accelerometers are essential for monitoring vibration signals. This article presents a highly sensitive accelerometer based on a Michelson interferometric configuration, which utilizes a hinge-based sensing mechanism to convert external vibrations into optical phase variations within an optical fiber. The resulting signals are demodulated using a proposed improved phase-generated carrier (PGC) demodulation algorithm, which offers enhanced stability compared to the conventional ones. The working principle of the accelerometer is analyzed through a structural mechanics model of the sensor. Furthermore, the improved PGC algorithm is theoretically analyzed and derived, and its application in demodulating vibration signals is demonstrated. The experimental results indicate that the resonant frequency of the hinge-type accelerometer is ~145 Hz, and within the tested acceleration range of 0–2 G, the linear fitting coefficient exceeds 0.9989, demonstrating excellent linearity. In the frequency range of 3–50 Hz, the sensitivity is 83.5 rad/G (with sensitivity fluctuation <5 %). The minimum resolution of the accelerometer is <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$0.45~\mu $ </tex-math></inline-formula>g/<inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\sqrt {\mathrm {Hz}}$ </tex-math></inline-formula>, and its transverse crosstalk is only 3.5 %. A detailed analysis of the sources of uncertainty of the accelerometer was carried out, and the uncertainty of the accelerometer was evaluated to be ~10.0 mG based on experimental results. The accelerometer structure demonstrated in this work shows promising potential for applications in low-frequency vibration scenarios such as structural health monitoring and seismic detection, especially for the seabed-based monitoring platform.
