• Mushrooms have the potential to bioaccumulate toxic pollutants and toxins from the polluted environments. • Isolation of NEO residues in mushrooms was achieved using the QuEChERS method, and quantified by HPLC-DAD. • The levels of the contaminants in mushrooms were generally lower than the permissible limits as provided by FAO/WHO. • NEO residues and selected metals were detected in mushrooms with negligible health and toxicity risks. • This finding provides a preliminary assessment of contaminant occurrence and screening-level toxicity in commercial mushroom powders.
