In this paper the results of the research project carried out under the Joule II programme have been presented. The project investigated the use of centrifugal fields in developing compact energy-efficient processing equipment, such as a polymer reactor and a solvent extractor. This equipment was capable of producing thin films or small bubbles/droplets which enhanced the hear and mass transfer rates. Test results suggest that significant energy savings can be realised by using processing equipment which exploits the benefits offered by centrifugal fields. (C) European Communities 1997.
