Abstract The advent of rare-earth permanent magnets (REPM) has brought about magnetic structures that were previously impracticable [Rot78, Tau85]. So different are these remakable materials from the earlier magnets that conventional design wisdom is inadequate to fully exploit their unique characteristics. Indeed, the conventional approach can lead to error or to the employment of quite inappropriate design procedures. The salutary characteristics stem from two basic attributes of the earth materials: (i) large intrinsic moments per unit volume; (ii) extraordinarily high resistance to demagnetization by external or internal demagnetizing fields.
