Verbal praise can improve time-based prospective memory in different attention load conditions

Abstract

Time-based prospective memory (TBPM) refers to remembering to carry out intended actions at a specified time and is sensitive to motivation. Verbal praise is expected to facilitate TBPM, yet its benefit may vary with attentional demands. This study examined how praise influences TBPM under different attention-load conditions. A total of 131 college students (18-25 years) took part. Under both low and high loads, the praise group showed better TBPM than the control group. They also monitored time more frequently and produced smaller deviations from the target time. However, the praise group's ongoing-task responses were slower than the control group only under high load. These findings indicate that praise enhances TBPM and that this enhancement is not moderated by attention load. Under high load, praise appeared to increase the attentional resources devoted to internal time estimation, as reflected in slower ongoing-task performance. Under both load conditions, praise also increased participants' use of external time monitoring (clock-checking) and improved the effectiveness of this strategy. The results support the motivational cognitive model.
