In my last editorial for JRME, I want to reflect on leadership. Being the editor-in-chief of this journal has given me an opportunity to steward one of our field's institutions-much like opportunities that others have as editors of ther journals, officers of professional organizations, program chairs of conferences, directors of funding programs or research centers, or administrators of departments or colleges. Those offices, often described as leadership positions, demand an individual's agency, energy, and values to be exercised. Yet, I argue, these leadership opportunities must be bound by the historically evolving mission of the organizations they serve. When leading institutions that serve the common good of a diverse research field, officers solicit and rely on the support of a public that, beyond its shared interest in the mission of the insti-tution, remains, ideologically diverse. Because individual contributors come from many directions and this diversity is important to maintain, I argue that the leader must aspire to neutrality in handling matters that are not central to the insti-tutional mission. Next, I provide some context and a few examples from my experience with the journal. Then, I elaborate on the contrast between this bounded leadership and the entrepreneurial leadership that neoliberal economit ideology has promoted in universities and other organizations for the last 3 decades.
