The concept of task engagement has received increasing interest in L2 learning research. Reflecting this trend, two research syntheses—Namkung and Kim (2024) and Qiu (2025)—have recently been published to offer preliminary summaries of the current state of the field. However, both reviews left some important questions unanswered (e.g., definition of task, research design), which motivated us to conduct an updated systematic review of this topic. To ensure robust coverage, three databases and 21 journals were searched, resulting in a report pool of 56 primary studies. To address gaps in the previous reviews, each study was coded for the definition of tasks and research designs. Simultaneously, bibliographic and demographic characteristics, as well as conceptualization and operationalization of engagement, data collection and analytical methods, study aims, and task types, were coded to identify issues that the previous reviews may have overlooked. Results revealed four key trends in the field: (1) lack of explicit definitions of tasks, (2) prevalence of experimental designs but with limited use of qualitative data, (3) insufficient attention to the outcomes of task engagement, and (4) small sample sizes. Based on these findings, we provide recommendations to guide future research on L2 task engagement.
