• New MRI methods to measure the diameter of the distal terminal ileum (TI). • Normative values in healthy volunteers (HVs) determined. • 65% of people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) showed faecalised material in the distal TI. • Mean cross-sectional area of the TI was threefold larger in pwCF than in HVs, likely reflecting increased chyme viscosity.
