Do cashless payments still increase vice purchases?

Abstract

Previous research indicates that cashless payments influence consumer behavior during grocery shopping, leading to increased spending on vice food (e.g., desserts and snacks) compared to cash transactions. However, many of the seminal findings from this literature are decades old, raising the question whether the effect of cashless payment on purchase decisions still manifests in today’s marketplace where consumers largely use cashless payments. The current research was designed as a replication to answer this question. In addition, this research explores why cashless payments increase unhealthy consumption and how consumers could curb such consumption. These results not only offer new insights into how the mode of payment affects consumer decision-making but also help consumers avoid overspending on credit cards and mobile payments.
