Dynamic Association Optimization in RIS-Enabled Mobile Wireless Systems

A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) featuring programmability and compatibility is proposed to enhance coverage and ensure robust connections between transmitters and receivers in future wireless communication systems. However, maintaining reliable connectivity in dynamic environments remains a critical challenge. This letter aims to minimize the outage probability in indoor wireless communication by optimizing the association between RISs and mobile receivers. To this end, we formulate an optimization problem that dynamically allocates reflective elements to receivers, thereby improving connectivity robustness while accounting for receiver mobility. To efficiently solve this problem, we propose a heuristic approach that significantly reduces the outage probability compared to baseline schemes without RIS. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively optimizes RIS-receiver associations, leading to substantial improvements in connectivity reliability in dynamic indoor environments.
