• First synthesis of C-CQDs from Coix seeds via a green one-step hydrothermal method. • Highly monodisperse C-CQDs with a uniform size of 1–3 nm • Constructed C-CQDs-based probe showing fluorescence enhancement upon Fe²⁺ binding. • Achieved wide linear range (0–500 µmol/L) and low LOD (2.9 µmol/L) for eco-friendly sensing.
