Globally systems of higher education are facing the challenge of remaining relevant to society and to the needs of people throughout their lives. Defining higher education purely as a means to obtain qualifications in the most efficient manner is driving a degradation of the system even as student numbers multiply. How can higher education successfully move beyond a mass system limited by a focus on economic efficiency and direct employment outcomes? This paper proposes that higher education systems serve a vital role as institutions sustaining the intellectual integrity of society.
