Abstract

This study, grounded in service-dominant logic, examines how perceived AI compassion in online health communities is associated with user value co-creation behavior. Based on survey data from 338 older Chinese users, the findings show that AI compassion is positively associated with gratitude, which in turn is linked to co-creation behaviors such as participation and citizenship. The indirect effect is significant, supporting gratitude’s mediating role. Furthermore, user loneliness operates as a key boundary condition, weakening the positive relationship between AI compassion and gratitude and thereby attenuating the overall indirect effect. The study offers a novel, service-oriented account of AI as an affective actor, conceptualizing AI compassion as an operant resource that can foster healthier community ecosystems through the emotional mechanism of gratitude. The findings provide practical implications for designing compassion-competent and hybrid human–AI services that may support sustained user participation in digital health platforms.
