• Luteolin possesses light-harvesting capability and can function as a photosensitizer. • Photoactivation enhanced the antilisterial efficacy of luteolin by 12.15 %. • Luteolin washing treatment removed 99.34 % of Listeria from chili peppers. • Luteolin treatment downregulated Listeria genes including motA, motB, agrA and prfA.
