• Global value chains (GVCs) function as distributed innovation systems enabling knowledge dispersion and interdependence. • We introduce and empirically examine the concept of knowledge dependence within GVCs. • Suppliers' knowledge dependence enhances their innovation impact; moderate dependence on lead firms maximizes profitability. • The ease of knowledge combination amplifies the positive effects of knowledge dependence on innovation impact.
