• N/O-APC-2 was directional prepared by using asphaltene with HNO3 pre-oxidized. • The effect of HNO3 on the pyrolysis behavior of asphaltene was firstly investigated. • For ZIHSs, N/O-APC-2 exhibited a high reversible capacity of 220.1 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1. • The storage mechanism demonstrated by DFT and ex situ characterizations. • Solid-state ZIHSs combine high energy density with excellent flexibility.
