Recent Advancements in the Development, Functionalization and Applications of Sustainable Bioactive Edible Food Packaging: A Comprehensive Review

The rising demands for sustainable food packaging have led to more studies focused on finding substitutes for plastic-based food packaging by exploring the field of edible packaging. One promising type of sustainable packaging is the bioactive enriched edible packaging which can potentially improve the quality of packaging products and decrease the environmental burden of synthetic materials. This review will discuss the advances in developing and functionalizing bioactive edible films and coatings for food protection, focusing on the natural matrices, bioactive agents, mechanism of action, and food applications. Bioactive enriched edible films are composed of natural biopolymer matrices made up of polysaccharides, proteins, or lipids, together with the incorporation of bioactive agents from plants extracts containing polyphenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, essential oils, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids. The mechanism involved in the antimicrobial effects includes cell wall destruction, enzyme inhibition, and oxidative stress induction in addition to the antioxidant actions of radical scavenging and preventing lipid peroxidation. The review will also cover the effect of plant extracts on physical properties like mechanical strength, barrier properties, biodegradability, and sensory properties. Practical examples of the use of bioactive enriched films in protecting meat, dairy, fruits, and bakery products will be presented in addition to the results on extending shelf-life. Current issues related to bioactivity extraction and standardization and potential future perspectives will also be covered. In contrast to previous literature reviews where one specific aspect or component is focused on, this study will highlight the relationship between the green extraction process and film properties with quantitative food protection benefits across different food commodities.
