• Task definition is proposed as a mechanism for metacognitive overestimation in IPS-I. • Explicit standards were operationalised through a rubric for explanatory knowledge. • Aligning standards reduced predictive and postdictive bias across two experiments. • Bias-reducing effects of standards ranged from small to large. • The Overestimation-with-Internet-Bias was attenuated under present task conditions.
