Abstract

This study uses a meta-analytic approach to examine the relationship between abusive supervision and employee antecedents and outcomes from the victim’s perspective. Data from 84 independent studies with 26,693 employees were collected and analyzed to examine hypothesized relationships and how they are influenced by institutional factors, including labor rights and power distance culture. Results show that abusive supervision is closely associated with various employee outcomes. Specifically, abusive supervision has the strongest effect on employees’ affective/strain-related outcomes, followed by cognitive and behavioral outcomes, with a relatively weaker impact on attitudinal outcomes. Moreover, the study found that the negative impacts of abusive supervision were partially moderated by labor rights and power distance culture. By providing the first meta-analysis on abusive supervision in hospitality, this study provides valuable insights for future research and practice, aiming to improve the theoretical understanding and practical strategies for managing abusive behavior in the workplace.
