• How books are read may influence the development of bystander behaviors. • 76 teachers were observed reading books about bullying to young children. • 5,662 comments referred to the critical incidents in the stories. • Yet only 20 comments about possible bystander strategies were made. • Is this unintentional omission a form of silent socialization?.
