Research on practicing engineers is critical for enhancing engineering education and the broader engineering profession. There remains a lack of empirical evidence on engineering practice, potentially driving misalignment between engineering education and engineering practice. The careers and practices of engineers are wide and varied, and there have been several studies which examine engineers at a moment in time (cross-sectional) or over time (longitudinal). Prior longitudinal studies on engineers focused on the study-to-work transitions. To address the opportunity for more empirical data on practicing engineers, a longitudinal study on practicing engineers from Australia and New Zealand was initiated to inform changes in engineering practice and education. This paper presents the protocol for this study, reports and analyses key participant demographics, and reports descriptive statistics on psychometric and engineering activity variables. The paper concludes with opportunities for future research.
